The best eSIM for India

India rolled out 5G faster than almost any market, and data is extremely cheap. A travel eSIM saves you the local KYC paperwork that a physical SIM requires.

Choosing

What to weigh up for a India plan

Coverage

India has strong mobile coverage across most tourist destinations, but network choice becomes more relevant when travelling through rural or mountainous areas.

Data budget

3–5GB is generally enough for a week of maps, messaging and moderate social media use. Heavy streaming and video can require considerably more.

Local detail

If India is part of a wider Asia Pacific itinerary, compare a India-only plan with a regional Asia Pacific plan before buying.

Trip length

Choose a validity period that covers the entire trip, including possible flight delays or itinerary changes.

On the ground

Mobile networks in India

India's market is dominated by Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea, with Jio and Airtel leading the 5G rollout.

Coverage in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru is excellent, and 5G is now common across urban centres.

Rural and mountainous regions, including parts of the Himalayas, can still be limited or older-generation only.

Most international travel eSIMs for India are data-only, which sidesteps the KYC identity checks required for a local SIM.

Popular destinations

Popular destinations in India

Delhi and Mumbai have dense coverage across their metro areas, tourist sites and transport hubs.

Goa's beach belt is solid, particularly around Baga, Anjuna and Panjim.

Jaipur and the wider Golden Triangle keep reliable connectivity for most travellers.

Ladakh, the higher Manali valleys and Himalayan trekking routes can have very limited or no signal.

Local or regional

India-only or Asia regional?

India's regulatory setup is distinct, so a dedicated India eSIM is usually the more dependable choice.

Regional Asia plans sometimes exclude India or offer more restricted data-only terms.

Travellers combining India with Nepal or Sri Lanka should check the regional plan explicitly lists India.

For an India-focused trip, a data-only plan on Jio or Airtel is the simpler route.
