GigSky is a US-based mobile data provider that has been in the travel connectivity business far longer than most of the eSIM startups, with device-maker partnerships behind it.

That longevity is why it has agreements in place — including maritime — that newer entrants have not managed to sign.

Cruise plans connect through maritime networks while the ship is at sea, then hand over to local carriers when you are in port. It is one purchase covering both states.

It is not fast broadband. Expect messaging, email, maps and light browsing to work well, and video streaming to be unreliable — but it is dramatically cheaper than shipboard Wi-Fi packages.

On land, GigSky rides top-tier partner networks across 190+ countries at 4G or 5G. Quality is good; the catalogue and pricing are simply less aggressive than the newer brands.

Installation is a standard QR or in-app flow, with plans available in both small trip sizes and longer regional buckets.

Trustpilot hovers around 4.1. Cruise customers rate it highly; land-only customers are more mixed, mostly on price.

Cruise passengers are the enthusiasts. Their reviews repeatedly compare GigSky's price to what the cruise line charges for onboard Wi-Fi and conclude it is a fraction of the cost for a usable connection — several describe it as the single best purchase of the trip.

Land travellers are more lukewarm. For a normal city break GigSky is competent but not cheap, and reviews reflect that: the service works, the price is unremarkable, the app is functional rather than delightful.

The recurring complaint across both groups is data consumption at sea, where background app refresh and photo backup can burn a maritime allowance quickly. Turning off automatic backups before boarding prevents most of those bad reviews.

Support is email and in-app ticketing rather than instant chat, which is the weakest part of the product and the reason a cruise plan should always be installed and tested before you sail.

Agents know the maritime side well — a genuine advantage, since most eSIM support teams have never handled an at-sea question — but response times are measured in hours, not minutes.

For a normal city trip GigSky is a competent, unremarkable choice at an unremarkable price. There is no strong reason to pick it over Maya, Nomad or Airalo.

For a cruise it is close to unique: ship and port connectivity in one purchase, on tier-one partner networks, at a fraction of what the cruise line charges. That is a genuine gap in the market and GigSky owns it.
